B Wishes at 4 Daughters Irish Pub
The songwriter and musician draws from her own inspiration B Wishes is at the top of her musical bent whether she's performing acoustic or with a full band. She and her band released a rock and pop album in May.Photo by Andy Mechling December 05, 2008 Laurie Heuston By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune B Wishes brings heady vocals and guitar skills to the songs she writes, and she delivers those songs with a clear musical bent. As political and personal explorations, the Grants Pass-based musician's songs are funny and tough, tender and insightful. Unlimited, like her style. "I don't really have a style," Wishes says. "I don't really listen to new popular music. I've got too many songs of my own going on in my head. I do like Amy Winehouse a lot, I like her vocals, but I still listen to Paul Simon or the Beatles when I want to relax." Wishes will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 9 and 23, at 4 Daughters Irish Pub, 126 W. Main St., Medford. The songwriter's dearest influences are stated on her Web site, bwishes.com, and include Paul McCartney and John Lennon because, she says, the two weren't restricted by genres. The Beatles' different styles of music coexisted on many of their albums. "You can't deny what you hear in your head," Wishes states. Wishes will present original songs and covers at her shows at 4 Daughters. "Typically, I play to the room, play what the audience wants," Wishes says. "There are acoustic songs that I do when I'm playing solo, then there are the songs I do with my band." Wishes plays a Martin during her solo shows, a Telecaster when she's performing with her band, B Wishes Band. She and the band released a new CD, "The Truth that Works for Me," in May. "It's with John Trujillo on bass, Mary Wacker on drums, Mawg, and me on guitar," Wishes says. "It was recorded over the past couple of years at Seedling Productions in Grants Pass, owned by Rob Gunderson. Some was recorded at Mawg's studio, and it was mixed and mastered at Mawg's." Wishes and guitarist Mawg have worked together since 1984. The two have a duo recording titled "Wishes and Dreams" that came out in 1991. They also work together with reggae/rock band The Toyes. "The Toyes are a bit more of a counterculture project," Wishes says. "Slightly different from my band. The Toyes are primarily me and Mawg as the songwriters, along with Trujillo and Brian Rogers, a drummer who lives in Sacramento." That is the lineup of musicians on a new Toyes album coming out soon. Wishes appears on two other albums with The Toyes, and she has a solo acoustic album titled "Live from Paganos" that was out in 2004. "Paganos" offers Wishes' pointed social and political commentary and showcases her work as a folksinger and acoustic guitarist, especially on tunes such as "Our Moment in History" and "Conquerors and Liberators." Along with her two solo shows, Wishes plans to bring her full band to 4 Daughters in April. Cover at $ Daughters if free. Call 779-4455. |

G Street was offering up the debut of the B Wishes Band. Wow what a night of great music. I've come to the conclusion that the only way to really experience a band is to park yourself at set one and stay till you're kicked out. Fortunately for me my wife is of the same mind. In attendance were a few notables: I finally met Ron Rasmussen who hosts the Cedarwood Jam on Thursdays. Mike Machado was hard at work taking photos, the ever appreciative Jonas Lohr was in full reverie and I met the lovely Jody who has several times sent me e-notices of local events.
More on the band: B Wishes obviously fronts the band and from the start you could feel her joy lifting the crowd and putting a real spark into the evening. Mawg was electrifying on guitar, just mad good, his interplay with B was a joy to watch. John Trujillo is the bassist for this group and he is simply the best. On drums is Mary Wacker who stopped by to say hi on a couple of the band's breaks. She was just loving playing with "B" and noted how professionally the band worked and rehearsed. It is worth mention that the largest ovations the band got were after a couple of original songs they performed. Both songs that "B" sent to this website a week ago and currently posted as tracks #1 and #2 on the sites music player. So to sum things up it was a night of four exceptional musicians with great dynamics and a joyful energy offering up a unique mix of covers and strong original material. |

It is always fun to have friends that are musically enlightened that turn you on to good music. But boy was I especially glad to have been turned on to B Wishes.
Her music is as good as anything being produced today. It is full of fun, insightful lyrics, beautiful melodies, and love, a truly revolutionary medicine. My favorite song is "Unreachable Peach." It is sung with such passion that is forces me to focus all my attention over to the love that B is bearing for the world to hear. B you make the world a better place by sharing your beauty and love in the music you make. Thank you and May the Force B with you |

Wow. Chris. Awesome. The guitar work in the album rocks. You provide a dreamy and beautiful sound to back up B's vocals, words and sentiment expressing your heart-felt understanding of her music in your playing. Queen of Extreme, is a great example of your ability to blend in, add color and deliver a unique chorus. Thank you for the sensitive exploration of the themes in the music, your expression of it is very fun to listen to. I'll be looking forward to hopefully seeing you and B play sometime in 2009! Happy New Year. Hahaha...I don't think I played on Queen of Extreme. That is okay, though. That is the way I should play in general...understated until it is my time to "turn on the charm" during a lead. I hope to play with her in 2009. We will see... |
